Pear soup

I got this remedy from some mummies over at the BayB Supplies Forum and I thought of sharing it here. Brewed this for Lia for the whole of last week when she was unwell, taking it as a cooling dessert for the little one for 'western' medications are heaty, and it does in a way make one's body weak after taking them. I bought my ingredients from Hock Hua, where the SA recommended me to add in some fish maw (which was not in the receipe of the mummies at BayB Supplies Forum) as it is good for one's lungs. Some of us may have different views on using Chinese herbs so I guess you'll have to decide it for yourself. Do as you deem fit okay...

Ingredients:
1 yellow pear
1.5 teaspoons of 南杏 and 北杏 - mixed (I remembered the SA telling me that 北杏 is slightly bitter, so you can use more of 南杏, which I did)
1 teaspoon of 川贝 (slightly crushed, get the SA to crush it for you)
2 cubes fish maw (This is Hock Hua SA's recommendation)
Some rock sugar to taste (not too much as if the soup is too sweet, it'd cause phlegm)
2 rice bowls of hot water - for brewing

A small saucer of hot water - for soaking the fish maw cubes

Left: 南杏,北杏 mixed. Middle top: fish maw cubes. Middle bottom: cane rock sugar. Right: 川贝

Steps:
Soak the fish maw in hot water for 15mins. (But the SA told me, soak the longer the better, say 30mins to an hour. I always forgot to soak beforehand but it still cooks fine).
Peel the pear and remove its core. Cut it up.
In a crockery pot, add in all ingredients, for the fish maw, please discard the water that was used to soak it.
Cook for 3 hours and drink soup warm.

Lia was on medications from her PD and the SA at Hock Hua assured me that it is fine to drink the pear soup at the same time. But some had told me that it's best not to mix the two, or to allow for at least an hour interval, and that left me quite puzzled for now. But anyway, after drinking the soup, Lia's coughing in the night was reduced, though it did not put a stop to her coughing instantly (nothing could anyway), but I am just glad that she was able to sleep better.
=)
