Damned viral infections!
Since the start of school, my baby have had gotten her fair share of viral infections. I could say that half the time, Lia had been unwell. It's mainly cough - that persisted for at least 2 weeks, and runny nose, and fever were a part of it too. The amount of money we've spent at her PD's clinic is certainly scary. On one occasion, the bill came up to $ 108+, and we weren't even perscribed antibiotics, but those bigger glass bottles of medications instead of the past small 1 or 2 ounce plastic bottles.
My baby gained weight, and lost weight. I was really glad when I see her hit the 10kg mark, she was 10.2 kg for a while but now, she had come down to 9.6 kg. =(
I am contemplating, to withdraw Lia from daycare. This is something I hate to do now for Lia despite the bad start, have had adapted to school's life and she is certainly happy there. She is the 'little big sister' in in her class, and she now knows every teacher in her school. (Well in fact, every teacher knows my little cheeky too) She is having a good time hanging out with her best friend, Ig, and Ig in turn takes really good care of Lia! Teacher Sheena told me that Ig though quite playful in a sense, has never pushed or bullied Lia. Lia's virgin kiss went out to Ig. I was told that Ig had kissed my baby's cheeks first and Lia in turn gave Ig a peck on his cheeks! Teacher Sheena was amazed at this deep friendship between the two little ones. Teachers in school had often tried soliciting a kiss from Lia but my baby had refused to budge. Never once did she succumb to the temptations of tidbits offered, nor whatever sweet nothings the teachers whispered to her, she never never gave anyone a kiss in school, except Ig. How sweet. =)
And I do hate the fact that I'd taking all these away if I withdraw her. But, my baby falling sick that frequently is something which I am not able to accept too. My heart would sink everytime I hear her occasional coughs, because that would mean she's been infected again and her virus' acting up. Merely a few days after she recovered, Lia would be struck with another viral infection again and after another few days of incubation period, the drama begins, again, in just a week apart.
Fellow mommies out there, how would you feel? Disheartening, is my word.

My girl brings to virus home and infects everyone, even the younger brother! He had bronchitis thanks to childcare germs. Argh. Falling ill is definitely one of the downsides of cc. It's a hothouse for germs! However, I think it'll be devastating for her to be withdrawn and kept at home especially when she's formed great attachments in school. If done too often (i.e. moving from kindys/cc) kids might develop attachment disorders. Hubby read the research. Abby has also settled down well in cc BUT we're taking her away coz we're shifting. So she's gotta readjust all over again at the new kindergarten. Hopefully that'll be the only withdrawal. They'll get stronger as their bodies develop antibodies to fight the viruses, so next time the same virus hits the body is more prepared (I think). We just need to be way more vigilant and get them to wash their hands etc and learn how to be clean. We've been watching Barney's 'Good Clean Fun' to learn how to keep clean. Gotta resort to the purple guy! :P
I remember when Meg first started in Day care. She would fall sick every other day. In the end, the paediatrician advise me against sending her to day care till she's older.
But like you, I can't bear to take her out when she's having such a good time. So in the end, I let her continue with school. It's tough to see her fall sick all the time and actually she still does fall sick often even till now. Although I am glad to say that the interval is alot wider now.
Tough call but just make sure she gets her flu jab and also check with the paediatrician on other jabs so even if she does get sick , it's nothing too serious.
Gene, Ethyl was infected 1.5weeks after going to her playgroup.
What we are doing now is practically let her eat more healthily, eat fruit everyday...avoid orange & watermelon.
She's still taking her cod liver oil daily...You will know best, Gene! It's not easy, but if you were to withdraw her, all of you have to start all over again...
As a Mommy, I know that you will be know how to decide and what's the best for both of you!
Hey Gene
Megan was nursing a cold, not through school but wet weather. we kept her away for a week, till she fully recovered and sent her back.
Kids this age quite vulnerable to virus, it's either they get it now or later. At least if they get it earlier, their immune system will be more developed. If they are always in a sterile germ-free environment, the future attackes will be more virulent and strong.
That's my two cents' opinion.
Hi Gene, I know & understand what you are going thru both on the part when Lia is sick & also thoughts of withdrawing from school.
It's tough for both, esp when both of you have been thru the difficult start & now she's enjoying school so much.
My gal, grace is now down with viral infection too not fr school but due to adults around her are sick. This is her longest ever fever she is having, and like you everytime, she coughs my heart sinks.
Hang in there! Do what you deem best for Lia & yourself. Take care.
g skider,
Yes, I couldn't agree more that day care centres are practically germ-houses! I feel bad withdrawing her too. Lia likes singing (tho she can't really sing yet) and dancing, and it's great that she's made friends... I feel bad giving up my work at this point of time too...
Esther,
Yeah, it's really tough and Lia's PD also said withdrawing her would be the BEST option. I just couldn't bear to do that! Thanks for your advise, I will ask her PD about flu jabs on our next visit.
Fannie,
Right, the part whereby we have to start all over again really scares me! I am looking into giving her supplements, hopefully things will get better.
Oyster,
Thanks, I am consoling myself too that Lia's building up her immunity system as she falls sick each time...
Jean,
Yeah, so disheartening.. *Sign.. And I do hope your gal gets well soon ya!
