Nihon Mura (日本村)

Fancy some sushi at S$0.99? With more than sixty varieties to choose from some more! Well, if you are already enticed, then Nihon Mura (日本村) is the place to go. :D

We had dinner there a couple of days ago, at their Yio Chu Kang (YCK) branch. The restaurant is nice, clean and spacious.

Nihon Mura doesn't provide you with the usual menu, what you've got to do is to pick out the ice-cream sticks of your desired foods, and place it in a container with a tag stating your table number. When you're done, pass it on to the order taking counter and then go back to your seats and wait for your food to be served. Of course, for the S$0.99 sushi you get to pick it up from the conveyor belt.

Here's what we ate:

1) Yansai miso soup, S$3.90 - I like the soup, not too salty, and they were generous in the ingredients. It comes in a big serving and it's good for the three of us.

2) Yakiniku beef udon, S$9.90 - the udon soup was fine but beef was too salty.
3) Fried tofu, S$1.50 - pretty normal, but it's economical, and nice, when you eat it hot.
4) Ebi fried, S$ 4.90 - fried shrimps, I think there was like six pieces per serving, rather good deal. James liked it, he ate four!

5) Chuka chimi, S$3.50 - if I'm not wrong, this is usually a premium dish at other Japanese restaurants. Serving size was good and it is really worthwhile for the price we pay.
6) Salmon sashimi, S$5.90 - six slices per serving, the salmon was reasonably thick. James said Sakae's serving had only five slices and they charged S$5.99. So, pretty worthwhile too.

7) Grilled shitakes, S$2 (two sticks)- I liked this, well, I originally liked grilled shitakes so need I say more? But it gets rather salty after you leave it soaked it the sauce they glazed it with.

8) Enoki bacon, S$ 4.90 (two skewers; three pieces of enoki bacon on each) - This is heavenly! The bacon wasn't too salty, the enoki (needle mushrooms) has this mild sweetness by itself and the grilling brings out the flavours really nicely! I was craving for it at work today!

9) Chawanmushi, S$3 - The steamed egg was nice and smooth, besides the usual ingredients, they even added a small shrimp and a ginkgo nut in it!

10) Five plates of sushi from the conveyor belt at S$0.99 each! This is good! What you get on the usual colour plates, you get it here too. The serving size was very reasonable, mostly in pairs or six small maki, there was also small california maki and it comes in a dish of three pieces. Very worth it for california maki is a premium dish and it's usually priced at S$5+ for six small maki.

You know what James said, by pricing their sushi at only S$0.99, people will tend to order freely on the ala carte dishes as the sushi was really cheap to begin with. Well, he was so right, I was surprised that we only ate five plates of the S$0.99 sushi, and our bill actually came up to S$ 56.55; inclusive of 10% service charge and 7% GST. But I'm not feeling the pinch for we had a good dining experience. Food's fine, and the staff are patient and friendly; I will definitely go back there again!

Nihon Mura YCK branch is located beside YCK stadium. You can take a train to YCK station and walk over, past the tennis courts. I don't have photoshop now and can't point out the restaurant in the picture below. I am standing under YCK station, at the bus 13 and 70 stand, and the glowing amber spot is Nihon Mura restaurant, at the left of those blue panels.
